Rectal diverticulum is an out pouching of the rectal mucosa through a rent in the overlying muscle layers and it is usually found in middle aged, male dogs. In the treatment of rectal diverticulum conservative treatment including feeding a tow residue diet, administering surfactants to soften the feces, and giving mild laxatives can be tried but cure is possible only with surgical treatment. The rectum is usually exposed using a dorsal, rectal pull-through or lateral approach.
In this study, the dorsal approach was used for the treatment of rectal diverticulum which encountered in 13 male dogs (4 associated with perineal hernia), with just one case being complicated with fecal incontinence.
From this study it can be considered that the dorsal approach to the rectum can be recommended as a succesful treatment choice of rectal diverticulum.
