THE ESTABLISHMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE UNIVERSITY OF ISTANBUL DURING ITS FIRST 10 YEARS (1972-1982)

The first scientific veterinary educating school of our country was opened in Istanbul in 1842. This school was a military one and in 1889. the opening of a civilian veterinary school has followed. These two schools were combined İn 1920 and in 1933 it was carried to the Veterinary Faculty in High Agricultural Institute in Ankara.

Following the Second World War, increased population of Istanbul and related importance of animal rearing sector made it necessary to open a new veterinary faculty in Istanbul.

Efforts and preparations were completed and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Istan­bul has been opened İn 1972.

In this study, establishment and development during the first 10 years (1972-1982) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Istanbul has been considered and its contributions to veterinary medicine, science and animal rearing sector of the country were evaluated.
