The most commonly used species for skeleton cleaning is Dermestes maculaius (Syn: Dermestes vulpinus). They clean the skeleton actively in an environment at 26.6-29,5°C optimal temperature and 50% humidity. They dislike hair, fur, skin, blood and organs but they consume the flesh rapidly to complete their developmental stages. Smaller larvae are used for thin and sensitive materials however: bigger larvae are used for big size materials.
The most important point which should be taken into account by those who studies with this colony is to take precautions to avoid infections because of the septic environment they deal with.
